Spring Term 1

We soon settled back into school after the excitement of the holidays! Miss Mayne’s English group began their new story ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. We read the first chapter of the story and used this to write poems and character descriptions of the Iron Man. To inspire our character descriptions, we created the Iron Man by junk modelling.

Take a look at our junk modelling….

Now have a look at some our fantastic writing. We are still writing our own versions of The Iron Man story, so please keep a watch out for our final stories.

In the afternoons, we have been enjoying our topic, ‘Materials’. During our computing lessons we have made stop motion animations of the water cycle using the ipads. First we had to learn all about the water cycle, then in groups we planned a storyboard. The week after we made our backdrop and created all of the props we needed. Next, we started our stop motion animation. We had to take hundreds of photographs and set them to show at 5 photos per second to create the effect of the water droplets moving. Please take a look at our animations. We are really proud of them.

During our science lessons we have been looking at solids, liquids and gases. Ask us which one is which…..

We have asked questions, made predictions, set up and  observed lots of investigations during this topic, including:

  • Reversible and irreversible changes – Blowing up a balloon using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda
  • Melting –Observing what happens to butter (in a bowl) and salt (in a bowl) when placed in hot water
  • Evaporation – Which location does water evaporate best from and why? (the windowsill or a dark cupboard)
  • Separating Materials – What equipment we could use to separate salt and water, flour and pasta and sand and water.

On Friday 13th January we held a ‘Big Thinking Day’ at school. We thought about the question ‘Where is God?’ We then used our thoughts and answers to inspire a piece of artwork.

In the morning, an assembly was held to share information about the day. Then we went back to the classroom to discuss our thoughts and ideas for our artwork. After that, we planned our painting using pencils and colouring pencils. Next we began painting. When we had finished painting, we wrote about our picture. At the end of the day we invited our parents and carers to share our artwork.

Here is some of our fantastic art work and our answers to the big question…
